Tiger Woods Stuns Golf World with Major 2025 Ryder Cup Announcement

Some news golf fans likely weren’t expecting came out on Monday morning.

According to a report from James Corrigan at The Telegraph, Woods is expected to turn down the 2025 Ryder Cup team captaincy for the United States.

There was an expectation that Woods, arguably the greatest golfer in the history of the game, would succeed Zach Johnson and lead the U.S. into one of the most prestigious events in all of sports.

Instead, it appears Woods is politely declining, citing “his time-exhaustive involvement in the peace negotiations between the PGA Tour and the Saudi sovereign wealth fund, which bankrolled LIV,” per the report.

With Woods out of the running, the captaincy is expected to be selected from among Keegan Bradley, Stewart Cink, Fred Couples and Davis Love III.

According to Corrigan, there was a belief Woods was willing to take on the captaincy role if there was an agreement that some of the time demands were reduced, but no such agreement was made, leading him to pass.

The 2025 Ryder Cup will take place on American soil at Bethpage Black, just outside of Manhattan. The 2023 Ryder Cup, which was won by Team Europe in dominant fashion, took place at Marco Simone Golf Club in Rome, Italy.
