Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s recent trip to Nigeria has drawn fierce criticism from royal commentators who say they pair are pretending to be royals despite leaving the institution in 2020.

On their three-day trip the couple met with charity organisations and politicians, and visited injured servicemen as part of events marking the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games, which Prince Harry co-founded.

Royal author and commentator Tom Quinn raged that it was treated like a royal visit rather than a personal trip, and said everything about it was “designed to give the impression that they are still fully paid-up royals”.

He said: “It’s as if Harry and Meghan have gone rogue and their Nigeria trip is a bold statement that they refuse to accept they are no longer working royals.

“What’s really upset the applecart is the fact that that the Nigerians treated Meghan and Harry as if they too thought this was an official tour all the signs were there as the couple were greeted with dances, receptions, visits to schools and charities.”

He also claimed there were fears amongst the Royal Family that Prince Harry and Meghan would “would try to pull a fast one”, and the trip to Nigeria “has confirmed their worst fears”. He added that it’s “easy to see why the royals are worried”.

Quinn added: “Everything you might expect from an official royal visit was there – the receptions, the visits to schools and charities, to wounded soldiers and the disabled.

“Meghan and Harry’s speeches and their whole attitude has been designed to give the impression that they are still fully paid-up royals and William and his father King Charles don’t like it one bit.

The British High Commisioner, Richard Montgomery, also spoke out about the couple’s Nigeria trip, confirming that it was not in any way a royal tour.

He said: “It’s great that the Duke and Duchess of Sus𝑠e𝑥 are visiting Nigeria, which I understand is at the invitation of Defence Headquarters. But they are visiting in a private capacity, not an official one.”
