Jennifer Lawrence discusses her decision to take a break from acting before shooting an X-rated film

Over the past 15 years or so, it feels like Lawrence hasn’t slowed down for a second.

Now 33 years old, the actor was only a teenager when she earned her first acting credit in Monk, before she burst into the spotlight thanks to her roles X-MenFirst Class and The Hunger Games.

She’s since gone on to appear in Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle, and Passengers alongside some massively famous faces – but while it might not seem like it, the actor did take some time away from the screen amid all that.

Lawrence decided to go on hiatus following the release of Dark Phoenix in 2019, and a couple of years later she spoke to Vanity Fair about her decision.

“I was not pumping out the quality that I should have,” she said at the time. “I just think everybody had gotten sick of me. I’d gotten sick of me.

“It had just gotten to a point where I couldn’t do anything right. If I walked a red carpet, it was, ‘Why didn’t she run?’”

Lawrence went on to explain how she felt she had been ‘people-pleasing’ for the majority of her life, saying: “Working made me feel like nobody could be mad at me: ‘Okay, I said yes, we’re doing it. Nobody’s mad.’

“And then I felt like I reached a point where people were not pleased just by my existence.

“So that kind of shook me out of thinking that work or your career can bring any kind of peace to your soul.”

After some well-earned time off, Lawrence went on to release Don’t Look Up for Netflix, as well as her explicit title No Hard Feelings.

Released in 2023, the comedy movie focuses on Lawrence’s character, a woman who is financially hard up, and comes across an interesting opportunity when she’s offered money to date a wealthy couple’s 19-year-old son.

Learning the teenager is introverted and has struggled with dating in the past, Lawrence’s character has her work cut out for her, and what follows is a raunchy comedy which sees her character trying to bring the young man out of his shell.

She said: “I was not pumping out the quality that I should have. I just think everybody had gotten sick of me. I’d gotten sick of me.

While the talk surrounding the movie is mostly around the, erm, nudity, many fans are praising one particular scene which actually has nothing X-rated in it.

Midway through the flick, Maddie and Percy agree to go on a date to make up for the proms they both skipped when back at high school.

As they are seated together in a posh restaurant, Maddie notices a piano in the centre of the dining room.

She quickly pressures Percy to go and play something for her. He decides to play a slowed-down version of Daryl Hall and John Oates’ ‘Maneater’, a song that Percy previously told Maddie used to scare him as a child.

When he returns to his seat after performing the track, a shocked Maddie tells him: “What the f***? That was unbelievable. How did you even know that song?”

And it’s safe to say many on social media had a similar reaction to the scene, with many flocking to X (formerly known as Twitter) to give their reactions.

“maneater piano scene in no hard feelings 😫😩 >>> ,” one person penned.

A second added: “You’ll probably hear a lot of chatter about THAT scene of Jennifer Lawrence on the beach, but THIS scene stole the movie for me. It’s pure cinema.”

While a third remarked: “No Hard Feelings surprised the hell outta me. I loved it. And that piano cover of Maneater… perfect.”

It’s one of Lawrence’s first movies since Dark Phoenix from 2019, after Lawrence decided to take a hiatus from making movies for a little while.

She told Vanity Fair: “I was not pumping out the quality that I should have.

“I just think everybody had gotten sick of me. I’d gotten sick of me. It had just gotten to a point where I couldn’t do anything right. If I walked a red carpet, it was, ‘Why didn’t she run?’… I think that I was people-pleasing for the majority of my life.”

No Hard Feelings star Andrew Barth Feldman is full of surprises.

The 21-year-old actor stars in the R-rated movie opposite Jennifer Lawrence, 32, and it sounds like he made a pretty big decision to make it happen.

Feldman, who began acting in musical theatre, put off attending Harvard University in order to take on the role of Percy in the controversial comedy.

In the film, Lawrence plays a struggling woman called Maddie who gets embroiled in a family’s plan to get their introverted teenage son to come out of his shell… by having her sleep with him.

Maddie is going along with the bizarre plan in a bid to secure a car.

Strapped for cash and a car after her previous motor was towed away, and on the brink of losing her childhood home, she answers a couple’s Craigslist ad asking for someone to ‘date’ their ‘un-f**kable’ 19-year-old son Percy before he leaves for college.

Matthew Broderick and Laura Benanti play Percy’s weird parents, and Natalie Morales (Dead To Me) also stars, along with Hasan Minhaj, Kyle Mooney (Saturday Night Live), Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Bear) and Scott MacArthur (The Mick).

Gene Stupnitsky and John Phillips are the minds behind the script, with Stupnitsky also in the director’s chair.

No Hard Feelings promises plenty of cheeky chuckles, as the trailer shows the Maddie struggling to bond with the awkward 19-year-old she’s been set up with.

An initial attempt to bond sees the terrified teen pepper spraying her in the face, and a later effort to assert his masculinity sees him accidentally punching Maddie in the throat.

Sony

While promoting the new flick in an interview on Good Morning America, Lawrence praised her co-star for being ‘so smart and cool and dialed’.

She also dropped the bombshell revelation that she skipped going to the prestigious Ivy League university for the movie.

“He put off going to Harvard to do this movie,” the Oscar winner revealed. “Very Percy like.”

Lawrence, who co-produced the comedy, showered Feldman with praise and said he was ‘immediately’ right for the role.

“We just wouldn’t have made the movie if we couldn’t find the right Percy,” she added. “We auditioned some great actors. And it was just immediate.”
